I just ordered an x-100 from novalasers and selected the UPS 3-day shipping. Will UPS charge any kind of brokerage fees or anything to get through customs? I have ordered an x-125 from nova a while ago and it shipped via USPS and there was no fees, but I have heard that UPS is different. Thanks.

It doesn't make any difference as far as shipping company goes, anything coming into the US goes through customs; USPS doesn't mean duty free.
What matters is the value placed on the item and how the item is classified by it's description. The description (HTS code) book it about 10,000 pages thick and has everything under the sun in. The problem is that just about every item has anywhere from 4 to 10 codes that would fit it perfectly, so it's up the customs person to pick the code based on the description. So duties could be anywhere from zero to 8% or more.
There is what's called NAFTA (north american free trade agreement), but there are a ton of items it doesn't apply to.

UPS are criminals.. I had a warranty return not long ago, and certainly not the first time this has happened.. The customer in the US sent the laser back (to Canada) clearly marked as 'return for repair' and UPS (the douchebags) tried to charge me 80$ brokerage!

Even with the original shipping paperwork showing the item was sold from Canada, they still tried for a fee.

I expect it when I buy things, but not on a return. The same scenario has played out with USPS > Canada Post, and they never try crap like this.

UPS also tried a 22$ charge on a 15$ item from ebay. I still dont know where they get the numbers from..

Other times I order from DigiKey (US based) and 4 out of 5 times I pay no tax nor brokerage? Ive even asked them why a 400$ digikey order has no tax, but a 15$ purchase on ebay has charges that are greater than the items cost. Never got an answer on that.

UPS will get you for every cent they can IMO.

We refuse all shipments to our company from the USA if not shipped by
Mail..
UPS charges outrageous Brokerage fees as wannaburn stated and we
boycott anything to do with them outside of Canada.
The Mail only charges us a flat $5.00 for any Brokerage from the USA and
only on items with a value over $20.00..

On the other hand items sent to the USA my Mail with a value under
$200.00 are exempt from Duty and Taxes..

OK, but what if the laser is being sent to the US via UPS, not the us postal service? Will there be any fees with UPS? And what company are you accosiated with?

Lasersbee, I'm not sure what you are talking about. you keep saying "our company". Are you the CEO of Novalasers or something?

I believe what Jerry is trying to say, is that he has also had negative personal experience with UPS. His business refuses to deal with any packages coming from the USA via UPS.

From what I have read, people in the US have also experienced issues with UPS.

If you have the tracking #, Call UPS and ask. They should be able to tell you ahead of time.

I dont think nova fudges their paperwork, but I could be wrong here. Hopefully a US resident who has ordered from nova in the past can shed some light.

Similar situation with FedEx.

Ordered a laser from Laserglow, $45 was tacked on, on the way in, from the broker.

Sent it back for replacement a week later, $45 again, even though marked "return for repair" per Laserglow's instructions (exactly) and I even had a FedEx person on the phone tell me how I should be doing it.

If you ship internationally, you'll get charged brokerage and customs fees. What you mark on it doesn't matter. Sometimes you get lucky and you don't. Most of the time, i'd simply count on it.

The reason is, - they can charge it, and when you call, FedEx can say "It's customs! There's nothing you can do about it! We can't call Canada and say 'we want this guy's money back'!"

Thing is, yeah, a tarriff can happen, but part of this is purely brokerage fees to figure out / collect the tarriff.

I fought with FedEx for a long time to try to get my money back on the 'taxed in taxed out' one-week laser. It went nowhere.

I just looked up nova laser in google maps.. Seems there is a conspiracy here..

Theres a laserglow tagged car in the lot. Perhaps one company and 2 names?

It's well known that they're the same company. No conspiracy. Laserglow is reputable; Nova is simply a brand of theirs. Nothing shady.

Think Honda and Accura, Toyota and Lexus, stuff like that.

Nova concentrates mostly on enthusiast 532nm lasers.

They save the Laserglow brand for the more esoteric (other colored / high power) stuff, as well as their OEM/Pro CNI units.

At the end of the day, it's all good quality CNI stuff.

Brokerage fees are what some courriers charge to get
Fat...(ie Cream/Gravy = Rip Off... IMO)
