Edit:
This will work the exact same way, with the same power increase using my new 650-G-1 glass lens mod:

rpaloalto, I am sending your DX new style dilda back today. (Thursday)

My custom Meredith lens modification works very nice with this laser from DX! :)

DX%20red1.jpg

DX%20red2.jpg

This laser measured 179mW's with it's stock acrylic lens. Then I put the Meredith glass lens modification in there, and it is now at 230mW's! :D

This is a 28% increase in power!

Now normally you can expect 20% increase for red with Meredith glass vs AixiZ acrylic (back opened)

Not sure why you got 28%, maybe the acrylic lens had degraded a little or something.

But for those who have this laser and want a Meredith glass lens mod, just make sure I know what laser it is for.

Because as shown in the pictures, I have to assemble the lens differently for this laser...

I use the tiny extra spacer because I wanted to make sure that the lens could not touch the diode if the focusing head was turned too far in.

It comes to focus, and still has about 3/4 of a turn left. Plenty for any kind of distance focusing...

Thanks jayrob, I'm glad you were able to make your Meredith glass lens fit.
This makes a huge difference in burning power. I just got the laser back this morning. I can see a huge difference in the quality of light emitted from this laser. It produces a very clean and tight beam of light. I just got done burning a piece of wood. I was able to focus it so tight. It produced a white light while burning.

Great service, explanative e-mails and a very fast turn around time.

Thanks jayrob

:thanks: ... and for posting back too! :)

Just so others can see what you are referring to, here's the picture again:

If you have one of these (new style 'dilda') lasers from DX, and you would like to fit a Merediith glass lens in there for a minimum of 20% increase in power, just let me know! :D

hey jay,

..a more general question about the lens holder you use.
its the aixiz glass lens-nut, so its 10mm long?
I'd like two short-focal lenses for a thin beam. unfortunately, my host doesnt have much space for the lens left (there is a cover in front of it). when collimated, how much of the lens is still sticking out? without the focus-ring, which I would file down myself. You wrote the red meredith lens isnt short-focal. so the lens will stick out quite far? I guess I would then use a 405-g1 for both my LOC and PHR (8x later) and sacrifice the 5% gain from a meredith..

1) how far does the 405-g1 module stick out of the aixiz holder, without ring?
2) same, meredith-module?
3) any other, short-focal lens for red (besides 405-g1)?

[shameless]
whats the answers for larry's module, anyway? it looks a bit shorter, but he offers the 405-g1 only..
[/shameless]

(asking here instead of pm, since others may have the numbers or other ideas as well)

thanks,

manuel

I have not tried the custom lens nut from MISTERRWILLING that LarryDFW is using.

rpaloalto told me that it was too long for his 'new style dilda' which I just fit a custom Meredith lens assembly into for him. (see above)

About the Meredith glass lens, it is also a 'short focus' glass lens similar to the 405-G-1 lens. Just not quite as short focus in design. But close!

My assemblies are designed to be used with the AixiZ focus ring in place. And leave a minimal gap between the back of the focus ring, and the face of the module. (with the diode pressed only flush with the module)

If you press your diodes past the flush point, then the gap between the focus ring and the module will be bigger.

The Meredith assembly has just a slightly bigger gap between the focus ring and the module than the 405-G-1 modification...

thanks for the quick reply!
so.. whats a "tiny gap"? not more than one mm? that would be about the gap of a standard aixiz acrylic?
thats good news about the meredith lens. have data about the focal distance? or the beam diameter at the aperture (LOC)?
thanks again! will paypal asap when some payment got in, these days!

About the gap between the AixiZ focus ring and the module...

Using AixiZ acrylic and a blu-ray build, you must press your diode past the 'flush point' into your AixiZ module, or you will not be able to thread your AixiZ acrylic lens far enough into the module to get focus.

Or, you can do what I always do. Just trim the AixiZ focus ring thinner. (which I do on the lathe) That way I just always press my diodes flush.

Now with my glass lens modifications, you don't need to worry about trimming the focus ring thinner, or pressing the diode past the 'flush point'.

The assembly is designed to be just right with a 'flush pressed' diode, and a normal AixiZ focus ring.

I would say that the gap will be about 1mm with a Meredith glass lens modification, and about .6mm with the 405-G-1. You do want some gap there for extra room for long distance focusing.

Note: These are fit for AixiZ modules. If you have a Sure module, I can machine the lens nut to work with that too, but there is a difference between the two modules. And my lens assemblies won't fit a Sure module unless I modify the fit...

macoe, I am sending your special Meredith glass lens modification today. (Monday)

Here is a picture of the assembly showing the direction of the install as well...
DX%20red2.jpg

The lens is already assembled, and ready to install. I used the extra 'tiny spacer' at the bottom (next to the threaded retaining ring), to give extra room at the bottom. This is necessary in this mod, because the new style 'dilda' laser, has a long canned diode that could hit the lens unless I make the assembly this way.

Hope you like it! :)

Got the new lens yesterday. Swapped it out with my Virtual Village lens in my Kryton red. I went from 310mW to 355mW with the swap of a lens.

Very nice Jay

Peace,
dave

Wow that's a huge jump in power from a Virtual Village lens!

Man Dave, you always seem to get the extra 'hot' diodes!

Glad you like the lens mod! :)
