Best diode and lens for long distance burning

Hi laser lovers,

I've been playing around with a sort of unique project. I made an engraver that can burn images at a distance. I'd like to use it to do large pieces, and maybe to mark layouts for an artist to do their thing.

For the picture you see, I am using DTR's 7W NUBM44 V2 450nm Diode along with a G-8 lens. I find this works, but I would like the beam to be smaller where it contacts the wood.. which is about 5ft. away in this picture. It's not as precise as I would like, and I think that perhaps precision is more important than raw power (If I can get both that'd be great!)

Could I get some suggestions on what laser/lens combo will give me a sufficient combination of power and precision to reliably burn at a distance of 5-10ft.?

Thanks!

I assume you are aware of the importance of laser safety namely eye safety and you wear the proper laser safety glasses ?

The problem with our favorite blues is the aggressive fast axis divergence which you can correct with beam shaping optics such as a cylindrical lens pair or you could try a beam expanded but if you are using the typical galvo/mirror setup in your scanner then a fixed beam would work better than using a beam expander.

Single mode diodes will give you better divergence since the laser light from them comes from a smaller spot

Coonie is correct, but I have another thought.

I was thinking about some non visible industrial lasers you could use but what you are doing has a big safety hazard aspect so that's likely not a good idea, as it is you may want to think about a low powered single mode laser so you could project an outline that you can trace with a pencil.......or you could use a data projector, I picked one up at auction for dirt cheap and it worked very well, you would get much cleaner lines especially curves and your layout could include shading, but most of all stay safe.
