Are the chinese blue lasers in any way a bad idea?

Hello,

Sorry if this has been discussed before, I did not seem to find that information by searching. I do know that in case of green lasers, there is usually a missing IR filter on the cheaper ones, making them a lot more dangerous than a high quality one.

What is the case with blue (445) lasers? Is it "safe" to purchase a chinese model instead of a high quality one? I have already gotten my hands on one of those cheaper ones that looks like a barrel gun (you know that design), but do want to know what I am risking by operating it. Thank you in advance.

No IR in a blue 445nm laser.. It's not built that way.
Look up any thread or post about "Laserpointerpro" and "Laserpointerstore".
There a ton of posts about cheap laser pointers here like your Gun type and the Thor type. Giving you a pass;) because the Search Bar really isn't to helpful lately.
I'm just to tired to start explaining again but just know they have the "potential" to last..

Thank you, I will look for what you have pointed out, it's good keywords I believe, for a newbie. This is the beauty of a forum in a way, getting to know the new members and for them to talk to the ones in the know, otherwise it will be only a set of wiki pages. Thanks!

Yeah, I understand. Mine is listed on those sites too:) If I remain in this, it seems I will need to look elsewhere for a quality laser:)

The 445nm blue diodes are all fairly inexpensive, so if you find a place where the power isn't terribly exaggerated I would not rule them out because they aren't expensive. I would stay away from all gattling style lasers as they are all crap, but I have a Thor H dual power that isn't bad at all. I got it for the cost of shipping it to do a review before they were released to the public.

Since you already own one, you will probably want to pick up a glass lens for it (they often come with plastic ones, which will melt) and some safety glasses (its hundreds of times more powerful then what is considered safe).
Eagle pair makes the best glasses: https://www.survivallaser.com/Safety_Goggles/cat556089_826120.aspx
These slightly cheaper ones should work too: https://www.dragonlasers.com/laser-safety-glasses.html
Don't trust laser safety glasses from random sellers, especially if they are very cheap.

I agree 100% with this assessment of the LPF Search Bar. I have found that the best way is to do a Google search which will often refer you to the appropriate LPF posts.

You can also add "site:laserpointerforums.com" (no quotes) to a google search to explicitly limit results to this website.
