The documentary discusses the insane security in China. The scene shows a high power laser metal engraver engraving someones ID number onto the blade cause it can be a dangerous weapon. Speaking of dangerous, no one is wearing safety glass while they are firing high powered lasers at reflective metals.

But hey, eye balls are overrated, and not as much of a safety concern as someone owning a kitchen knife.

If that's a fiber laser at 1550nm then it's " eye safe "

That is it won't pass through the cornea to the retina, rather if hit in the eye with a diffuse reflection it would burn the cornea first although with diffuse reflections it's unlikely however a 20-50w specular reflection of any wavelength would be awful.

A lot of fiber laser markers I have looked at on ebay are listed as 1064nm which is not " eye safe "

It looks like a fiber laser engraver and they can use 980nm pumps to pump an active fiber that can yield a high quality 1550nm beam and in that case it would be reasonably safe, but the fiber engravers on ebay that are shown as 1064nm........unless they are listing the pump power to make it look stronger could be dangerous without attenuation glasses.

The metal will absorb almost completely light, and you will be safe

Aren't mirrors are used to reflect all laser wavelengths? Mirrors are made of metal, metal reflects. Even if the metal somehow absorbed 100% of the laser, the glow of the metal alone could damage your vision, what do you think welding goggles are for?

With a laser that strong, even a reflection at 1% efficiency could blind you.

CO2 lasers are normally 10,600 nm, which glass is opaque at this wavelength, use ZnSe or NaCl for mirrors.
