Gonna get that as my first green laser (for recreational purposes) how long will I safely survive without goggles & IR filter?

You should combine all of your questions into one thread. Making multiples doesnt make us answer faster. Your already getting neg repped for this

Good point---I am starting to think must be troll when someone asks " how long will I safely survive without goggles & IR filter" concerning a laser that costs $4.59 on ebay, which is less than the price of a Mocha Frappuccino coffee at Starbucks, after spaming the forum with 5 threads about the same thing and ignoring any advice offered.

Oh man, im starting to miss the good'old days where trolls made threads last forever with clever material that was funny and got tons of members into a discussion for nothing. This is just your typical spam trash lol.

Im not ignoring advice, I hear u all saying "search threads", "see this site", "it's illegal". But my question is: which model would u recommend? Plz link me to a positively reviewed 1 (a specific model).
I have been searching too, dunno which laser is ok since I lack l'experience!

Edit: Not trolling, I dunno what an infrared filter's specific function is and I asked if goggles are absolutely necessary because typically, other people will be viewing my laser too and I doubt they all need goggles (keep in mind, I've only ever had a $1 laser)

FIVE BUCKS for a cup of coffee?!
Holy sh*t! That explains why people can be a bit cranky around here

:na:
Kiddin', kiddin'.

@Zyzz,

Look man, people here have a negative response to "I just want a burning lasers" kind of approach, even though at least some of them won't admin that's what brought them here in the first place.

You can survive without safety goggles just fine. IR leak from sub half watt green lasers is completely irrelevant.

What you need to use most is your common sense and awareness of people around you and your environment. Never point the laser down the hallways, or into closed doors, or through windows, because you never know when somebody gets in the way. Goggles protect only your own eyes, responsibility protects everybody's.

I for one never had a bad experience with O-like and would recommend grabbing 50mW greenie or similar, from there. They've got reasonable prices and good stuff.

You can also grab lasers from survivallasers.com and bitlasers.com, both of which are ran by respected members from here. You need any help with lasers or navigating the forums, shoot me a Personal Message, I'll do my best to help you out. Always sad to see a star-eyed enthusiast being shunned and neg-repped into red because of some technicality or other.

Damn, thanks dude! I like that you can give advice and still be objective/unbiased about this, really nice of you. Laser Chick is only other nice 1 so far.
Sweet, glad you recommend 50mW, it's a good in-between.
In another topic they imply that I'm stupid for not having goggles & IR filter but after reading what you said as well as further reading, IR filters seem uneccesary with PEN lasers.
Anyways, I'm off to laser hunting! :p

I wouldn't say IR filters are unnecessary. For example, there's this:

Yes, my ebay 5mW pen actually outputs 40mw. But 35mW of that is IR.

IR is not good for the eyes and should be filtered.

Well said Eudaimonium & ryanr256 Rep + for both of you :)
ZyzzFan666, really pay attention to what ryanr256 said about a laser listed at 5mW but it is really a 40mW laser with 35mW of it being IR. This is dangerous for your eyes no matter how you slice it or dice it!!!!

So if I get appropriate goggles, I can keep my precious power right? Lol it's just so cool that it touches stars!

Is it bad for my eyes along a span of a year or a week? Probably takes a week to have em shipped

It's bad for the eyes if it gets directly into the eyes.

Simply "being emitted" isn't bad for anything. Sun's light contains wider spectrum of IR than that. We're all still alive and well :D

@Ryan, yours is a freak occurrence, IMO. I have measured unfiltered 400mW greenie, maybe 50mW of that was IR. Out of regular pens, I couldn't get any sensible measurement as my improvised LPM instrument wasn't that accurate anyway.

What you probably got there is partially dislodged crystal. Any more and it's just pure IR output. If the crystal stayed where it was supposed to, you'd be getting a lot of green out. So basically it's a factory error, not a rule.

^Very knowledgable, homie, I am getting this vibe from half the forum that I need an IR filter and goggles for this ambiguous laser I have although I do not wish to sacrifice power as you can visibly see the beam till the stars. On the other hand a lot of you are dissuading me out of an IR filter :p
