It's from a Stanley fat max that wouldn't work due to it reading the batteries are bad. So I gutted it and the heatsink. How well will this prepare me? I have a fully adjustable power supply and I just need to learn to solder a driver to the led. Is this a good start?

I already looked at the current graph for it.

probably not, a laser diode is very sensitive to heat verse a LED module is a bit more stronger in a sense, and flashlights don't typically have heatsinks in them! At least not the type used in high powered pointer's! you should go on YouTube and check out styroPyros
DIY'S videos and read the (I want to build a laser pointer forum) hope this helps
