I want to buy a green laser. Not toooo powerful, but somewhere around 100-150MW. The two I have my eyes on are the:

LP 532nm 150mw from laserbtb:
LP 515nm 532nm 1-150

and then the 80-120mw from sci-fi lasers (SF501B 532nm GreenSF):
SF501B 532nm Green

My question is, I keep reading up on how the LP 150 will be much weaker at colder temperatures. This might not be a problem now, but what about night time at winter? Will this laser still be effective then? Does the one from sci-fi lasers have the same temperature issue? Any other opinions about these lasers or maybe better lasers for the price? They should be able to burn too.

All DPSS lasers will be a little unstable and have varying output as temps change, some are more stable that others but this is something with the DPSS process so cant be completely eliminated.

If you wish to avoid this I recommend a laser based on the Osram PL520.

So would this work? HL 520nm 30mW-150mW

Except for $80 I can only get around a 50W laser if I chose to go the 520nm laser diode route instead of a 150W 532nm DPSS laser.

Is it worth going the 520nm and losing 100W of power? Or should I just go for the 150W and deal with the fluctuations in power (I don't think it would ever get as low as 50W) with the DPSS laser? Which beam would be more attractive? A 50mW 520nm beam or a 150mW 532nm beam?

I guess that depends on how much power you need/want. Also note that the single mode PL520 will burn better than a DPSS laser(DPSS not good for burning)

Also the PL520 can be pushed up to 80mw safely so perhaps look into other manufacturers if you really want more power.

Also note that finding safety googles for the 532nm DPSS lasers is not always so easy because you need ones that cover the 532 spectrum as well as the IR spectrum.

The 80mw beam on my PL520 looks better/cleaner than the 50mw beam of my 532nm DPSS ebay pen laser. So I would say the beam is better on the PL520.

Yeah, I intend on getting an eagle pair that covers both the green wavelengths (so 520/532/whatever) and IR (808/1064). Also, do you know what it means by "single mode" here? HL 520nm 30mW-150mW
I might save up a little more and get the HL520- 150.

Yeah there are 2 different Osram PL520 diodes, the PL520 and the PL520B1

The PL520 is a single mode diode(better burning and divergence) and can run to 80mw or so.

The PL520B1 is a multimode diode that can run up to 150-200mw or so. While a multimode diode usually means bad divergence I have seen it posted that the PL520B1 has excellent divergence.

For that large of a difference in power the 150mw should still burn better.

What are you trying to burn? wood? light matches? pop balloons?

Because if I have learned anything since getting into lasers its that you can never have enough power for burning :)

My 324mw LPC-826 660nm laser is by far my best burner but I found myself wanting more power all the time :)

My next build will be a 1w+ dedicated burning laser.

Yeah, just matches/balloons small things like that. But yeah, I feel ya. I just don't want you know 500mw,1w, etc because I can't really toy around with that. (I can't toy around with 150w either, it's still very powerful).

Yeah for the small stuff like balloons and matches(at close range) a good 100-150mw even a DPSS will work fine.

And yeah I hear ya about the high power lasers that's why im considering a lab style setup for my burning laser not a portable unit. Easier to control and make safe the surroundings when its plugged into the wall. You can still "toy around" with it you just need to secure the room you are using it in and wear the appropriate eye protection, and make damn sure you have a good spot to terminate the beam and don't end up burning the paint off the walls lol.
