Hello everyone, This is my first request for help here. I've been reading a lot of threads on building Laser pointers and the problems that are common. So heres where I'm at, I've bought an O'Like "torch" host which didn't come with a LD or driver and I'd like to know what do you measure in the host to find the size of LD , module and driver ?
I wanr to intall a 405nm LD because of the blacklight glow effect . Do merchants have them in the 150 mw to 250 mw range ? :thinking:http://thumbs1.ebaystatic.com/d/l225/m/m41dz72LlIsUpOPmAn6XbSQ.jpg

Hey Fritz, you could check out DTR's site, he has 405nm packages that include diode, lens, 12mm module, and a preset driver that can be set at 250mA.
Then all you would need is a heatsink made to fit your host. Many of the machinists here could help you out.

Thanks, 'll check DTR's site out . I just edited my post and uploaded a URL for a pic . Did you see the photo /:):)

Oh and I didn't mention I own a running metal lathe . I could use some pointers concerning measurements from a fellow machinist . But then I could just have someone machine the copper heatsink ..:yh:

I see the pic now. Did that host come with any heatsink at all, looks as if there is an aluminum one in the picture.
I'm on my phone right now so I can't link this, but if you decide to have a h.s. made, check out this: "Made in LPF-support your fellow laserists FIRST". It has links to every thing you will need.
It's the first sticky in the "companies" section.

I'll take it apart..OK I have the front part now , it has optics in it , a lens smaller in the inside About 4 mm, the outside has about 8 mm dia. of glass . No apparent HS .
Now the rest of the assembly . I see a brass disk thats threaded the same thread as the inside of the front . About 18 mm . Theres two tiny holes about 13 mm apart and few mills deep which I assume are there to torque the brass disk out or in . In the center is a thru hole perhaps 5mm dia . I assume the LD goes in there . I have to look for an appropiate tool to torque the disk out . Behind the disk will be the battery ,. Is this where the module and driver goes ? I'll upload pics later . I don't see a seperate aluminum HS . I'll diassemble more.:undecided::yh:

I think the brass disk could be the HS ?

Pics would be great. If you don't have the correct spanner wrench to fit, sometimes small needlenose pliers will work.

I'll go to the hareware store and pick up the appropiate tool tonite . It seems that theres room inside the brass object , perhaps for the driver . I can see it from the rear . I'll be back later or tomorrow with pictures:)

Fritz, just go to the search bar at the bottom of the page, and type in "DTR's laser shop".

EDIT - Just enabled link ^^^

What you're looking for is either a 5.6 or 9mm hole concentric with the O.D. of your host. The hole will
have a shoulder or "lip" inside going down to a smaller I.D. The hole will go all the way through and the
other end will have M9 x 0.5 threads to accept the lens. If there is nothing to thread the lens into, then
you will have to make your own. I can provide you with further instruction in such a case.

Thanks Bowtieguy . I found DTR's site and it looks like I would be able to find something there . Did you get my second PM ?

Lightning Stalker..I finally got a tool to remove the brass disk from the O'Like .The disk is .262 inch thick and measures .737 inch

Dia. acrosd the threads. It is recessed in the read with about a mm wall thickness. The hoke is about 4MMs dia and countersunk The dia the same as some LDs harvested from some DVD writers about 5.5 MMs dia. . This is where I think the LD would be pressed into the disk. With the disk removed I inserted a pen up to a 18650 battery and pressed in collapsing the rear end battery spring and I get 38MMs Sutract 6mm for the disk and theres 32mm space . With the disk inserted and screwed completely in theres 10.5 mms room which space is taking up by the focusing mechanism. So thes about 22mm room bhind the disk for a drived to be attached and soldered on. I'll be doing pics when my son shows mw how to upload them . I hope you guys can figure my notes out . Sorry that its not perfectly clear . Much thanks.:eek: I'll measure yhe opits thread next

That sounds like the heatsink alright. Don't expect to get much power out of that if it is indeed brass.
Maybe 100 - 200mA

100 to 200 MWs would be OK unless I can get one made out of copper. I want this one with a 405 nm diode to observe the blacklight effect . I would like to use it to collect flouresent minerals .:yh:

What driver would fit ?
