Is it possible to make custom diffraction lenses?

Hi there i'm new :beer:

i was curious if it'd possible to make custom shapes in those lenses that screw on the caps of laser pointers? After some research I don't think a grating is what I need since it diffracts lights in all directions.

I remember as a kid they had these tips with a pointer finger, an arrow, a crosshair, etc. you could screw on. something like that. I'd like to make a star shape for this film I'm shooting.

Any places I could contact to make me a custom tip? or a guide on how to make my own? I've always been fascinated by lasers so I wouldn't mind getting my hands dirty.
 





No, you cant make your own. You can have some made but they are far from cheap. Google around for best prices.
 
Unfortunately if you google laser and stars, I doubt he will find the
type hes looking for. I just tried on ebay and got what I figured..

Try searching ebay for 'red keychain laser' and take your chances
with ones that come with a bunch of the heads, or try asking the
seller. Just watch when you use the term 'star', there are a lot of
different patterns referred to as such..

Look for something like this ..

Thats a good route if you need custom lettering etc.. If just the shape of a star
as mentioned in the OP, hed probably spend a lot less with a simple old school dollar store
pointer and caps.. IIRC there were 12$ pointers with like 50 caps.. got to be one in there.

Wish I could find my middle finger cap.. A 1W+ middle finger would be a sight to
see at distance on a large building :can:


@OP, there is a star in this ones pics, but this laser doesnt have caps, it rotates
to the next.. Though they are out there..

Found the closest I could remember.. 42 caps. I would contact the seller, and see what
the patterns are. He appears to be located in the USA.

I need a custom grating to project 3W of laser onto my wall that says

"DO NOT STARE AT THIS SIGN"

lol
 
Every one of those dollar store cheapies I get has the single dot, a thumbs up (either left or right hand) and a 5 point star cap for it.
Just go out and look in your local stores and you will probably find it.
I got 40+ patterns with a cheapy for all of $5 some years back. The laser was more or less the same and the caps all fit on the $1 ones too.
They are out there and they are dirt cheap.

Just found out the other day LOGO was a gay program channel. :tinfoil:
 
I never watched it to be honest. My girl friend was checking out new channels on the box and told me about it.
 
thanks i've contacted that seller. I've spoken to a few people about custom diffraction gratings and the lowest i've been charged is $20,000 so that's not gonna happen :crackup:

I should have clarified in my original post, the shape is actually a pentagram. so a 5 sided star with a circle around it, it's for a shoot for this clothing brand called UNIF from the US. apparently they have a "rebellious attitude" :evil:

anyways if a seller does have a 5 sided star for sale would it be possible to also get a tip that casts a circle and align them up to create the shape for the shot?
 
You can make projections using paper and a lens. Just burn whatever you want on a black piece of paper. If you make it the right size you can fit it in the beam of a 10x expanded beam and get a projection that goes very far, but it''ll be small.
