Rayfoss Up-to-Spec??

I bought a 50mw 532nm laser from Rayfoss:
www.rayfoss.com
for $38, but everyone says $38 for a green 50mw is really cheap and probably far underspec. However, Rayfoss seems to be a reputable vendor for lasers, and claims to test each laser's power output before shipping them out, and guarantees the power.

How far underspec can it be?? I expected something like 40mw 532nm and 5mw IR... am I mistaken??

Edit: Link fixed

Re: Rayfoss Up-toSpec??

In general, lasers from o-like, lazerer, and rayfoss, marked as 50mW will come in on spec.

IR content on the modules used can vary widely though, I've seen as little as 2% and as high as 40%. Most likely you'll be looking at about 40mW of green and 10-15mW of IR.

Btw your link isn't working.

Thanks, I fixed the link

So is $38 a good price for an up-to-spec 50mw green?

It's decent. I mean it's not a steal, but you didn't get ripped off either.

Re: Rayfoss Up-toSpec??

I just recieved this laser as my first laser the other day. I don't know if it is a true 50mw but it is quite impressive and it also amazes anyone I show it to. The beam is completely visible at night and you can even see the dot clearly on a cloud. The shipping took a bit of time but in the end (with both batteries and the free charger) I would say that the price for everything was worth it. :D

You can laze a dot on a cloud?? I'm gonna try that when I get my laser :D

I didn't know you get a free charger though... It's not listed on the page; anyhow, is it a 18650 or 16540 charger?

Re: Rayfoss Up-toSpec??

I also bought a laser from rayfoss recently.

It is the RF405-500mW-FSS.

Faona told me that they tested my laser before shipping and it is up to spec.

The laser is on its way so I will wait and see (I have a LPM).

Re: Rayfoss Up-toSpec??

I have a friend that has a rayfoss 40mw dpss and his lpm is reading stable at 53mw(did not measure IR) if that helps, I got some glasses from them and good lord they don't work, but their glasses and lasers may have nothing to do with each other. It took my glasses about 5 weeks to show up so it may take some time but it shows up.

The costumer support is good I sent an email out at the 1 month mark and got a response back with in 24 hours from a person and told me what was going on with my shipment. I would try a laser from them if I wanted a laser I could not make.

Their glasses don't work?? I bought a pair with my laser...
How did you test if it worked or not? It's only cheap polycarbonate with a coating, so if you directly shone a 50mw laser into it for more than 7 seconds, I would expect it to fail...

Re: Rayfoss Up-toSpec??

they were rated at 500mw on the web sight.
I don't expect them to handle a 1w laser but to pop a balloon though the goggles with 1W I decided to borrow an lpm to see how bad it was, and the result a 1.23W output of 445nm give 762mw not even close to safe.

Good thing I had a back up, I ordered them for friends to view my lasers with, all I have found them good for is acting like your on mars.

IDK the dye could be off on them but I can see the beam as blue though them, I should not be able to see beam at all.

I will find my old order email and post the model I picked up but it was rated for use with 445 and 405nm at od3 up to 500mw, memories are junk with me though, so I would have to look them up to be sure.

Re: Rayfoss Up-toSpec??

I bought a 600mW laser from them that metered 67mW with IR (89 max).... Not sure if they're better now, but I wouldnt order from then ever again. However, since you're going for 50mW, I have no doubt you'd be close to spec

Well I guess that's how much $12 of protection is...
So what should I do? I got the goggles to burn stuff with my 50mw because even looking at diffuse reflections of >30mw lasers can be harmful to the eye.
Should I burn things with my eyes closed?? That doesn't seem any safer :p

Re: Rayfoss Up-toSpec??

I don't think a reflection from 30mw would do to much.

I am not sure I can burn anything with a 50mw unless I use a extra lens close to what I want to burn, I would think the glasses would work for that, oh do be careful using an extra lens, some of mine reflect some of the beam depending on the coating.

I do close my eyes sometimes to burn with high power but even with good glasses I will never get hit by a direct beam on a UV or blue laser, that being said, I have been hit many many times with dpss pointers from 5mw to 40mw and no eye damage as far as I know, I do got tons of floaters and I have developed a issue after lasik where I see UV now and it hurts to look at, I think a 405nm is way brighter than most see it, its like a strong white beam to me with a black-light glow from the fast axis radiation. I really cant tell you how much protection you need for green 40-50mw, but if the IR is up to 2 or 3w and the filter is no good, you will smell burning hair if it hits you in the eye and that cant be good. Anytime I burn with a laser I aim the dot with glasses get my focus then close my eyes haha. Just be as safe as you can till you know what your eyes can take, and if it burns tape it can burn though you capillaries in you retina.

I think 30mw is the very minimum FDA says will cause eye damage after prolonged exposures to diffuse reflections; I kinda disagree, I think the only way to get eye damage from diffuse reflections of a 30mw is if you stared at the reflection off of a white wall for 30+ seconds without diverting your eyes, but I ordered a 50mw, so I got goggles just to be safe. :)

The 50mw I ordered is focusable, so I'm pretty sure it'll burn things at close range, since Rayfoss LPMs their lasers.
They should start checking the OD of goggles though...I didn't even think of goggles being "underspec" before buying them... only lasers.
