Got my Osram PLTB450 a few days ago from JTR's Laser Shop, and just now got around to playing with it. It's eventually going in a projector and I'm waiting for some heavier heat sinks to show up. Before I put it to actual work though might as well have some fun.

Color wise I can't tell the difference with my previous M140s. I'm used to dealing with LED's in the 440-455nm color range and can spot a tiny difference in Bins, but visually I don't see it. I have a spectrometer if I have to pull it out, but if my eyes don't see it (maybe I' just getting old) I really don't care what my spectrometer says.

One particular difference I did notice with the Osram -vs- my prior M140s is it's burning capability. Maybe it's something to do with the Osram and how it focuses, but with the 3element glass this thing is a nasty little firestarter. Already have a few unintentional scortch marks on my door and walls to show for it.

Now, all healthy 445's when driven at an amp (which is what I'm driving this one at) can easily burn. However, the Osram seems particulary fast at setting things smoldering from 20' across a room while not fussing with the optics. That caught me by surprise. I'll have to sacrifice a red solo cup or two and see just how far away this thing can do the deed before it putting it to actual work

The Osram will burn better in some respects because the emitter size is a lot smaller and can be focused to a tighter dot so higher power density.

Out of curiosity, what spectrometer do you have?

Those 3 element lens help the divergence of the beam a lot. They can improve far field irradiance.. better far field burning.

Though get a single element 405-g2 on there, and you won't believe what you can do at close range. You will get a very tight beam.
