Re: Custom 7 Color DIY Laser Kit

I ordered another 8x Blu-ray drive yesterday from Newegg. http://laserpointerforums.com/f46/8x-lg-wh08ls20k-169-99-a-43791.html

I will then be able to finish rebuilding my projector lasor setup with flex drives and an updated kit. I also plan on adding TEC to that one so it will be interesting how it works with the adjustable heat sinks. The plan is to build a tray of pasty heat sink compound on the cold plate that the heat sinks sit in. It's the only way I can think of to add TEC to these babies and keep them adjustable. I suppose you could add tec to each one but then the heat would be in the enclosure. I want the heat to transfer out of there.

The tray of past seems like a good idea to me but if anyone has a better idea let me know.

That's the good news. The bad news is that work is sending me to Dallas TX next week so I woun't be able to play with the new drive for a week or more. It's going to kill me. It also means that I can't build and restock my kits next week as I intended.

I will be posting the name the kit contest tomorrow so if you have been wanting one of them but can't efford it here is your chance to grab one for free.

I thought up "Beam Engine" a while back so you will have to do better than that to win :) I just know someone has the naming gene out there and has the perfect name.

thanks,

Ryan

Hello Ryan,
There may not be a need for that contest, but who knows. Here's what I came up with.

H.E.P.T.A.L.

Headlight Encased Power Transcolor Array of Lasers

Hepta + L = HEPTAL

[Greek heptas, heptad-, the number seven, from hepta, seven; see sept in Indo-European roots.]

Re: Custom 7 Color DIY Laser Kit

I think thats a lil complicated. I always call it the "7 color BEAST" as it IS 7 colors, so its descriptive and easily identifiable. and BEAST because well... it's a beast! thats also an eye-catcher ;)

Or maybe "7 Color Beast Engine" YEAH!! that sounds HOTT!!! thats MY entry!

I wanna kit! lol ;)

Hi Dark, I got hepta from the thesaurus and I made up words for the letters but he doesn't have to use it as an acronym. Hepta means seven and I added the L for laser. So he could just call it HeptaL. I was trying to sound professional :p.

Do you still have that module? I'm going to buy it from ya on the 1st if you still have it.

Very nice !!!

I never realized all it takes is 1 PHR sled !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just wayy out of my price range...

IMHO, for 170$, the turning mirror should be pre-adjusted...

Can't adjust the turning mirror without your lasers installed and positioned where they will stay...

Thats the thing, everyone has to do their own mirror. every diode made is slightly different, and you must "twist" your modules while installing to get the to line up JUST right... it's crucial, thats why we cant sell a kit with a pre-set turning mirror, you beams would likely be way off track.

it isnt as easy as popping in 3 modules, powering them and TADA!!! instand 7 color laser.... nope..

Theres a TON of tuning/tweaking involved, as well as case positive and negative issues. then comes the mounting of the kit itself, it must be free of vibration, AKA Isolated.

Just a few hinters that were already available, but may have been burried.

Im gunna enter my kit name in the contest now :D

Sorry Dark but the contest has ended. I myself made it to the final list and that alone makes me feel pretty good. All of the people on the final list get 10% off the price.

Hey Tyler. There's a design that I made. I asked Jayrob if he would like to look at it but he didn't respond as of yet. Would you be interested in looking at it?

Great illustration Ryan! :gj:

If this build is new to you, may I just emphasize the importance of getting your dots lined up as good as you can at the same time when you go for this '1st step alignment' with the turning mirror...

Ryan mentions this in his first post. ("I use two cue tips on the upper corners to work the yaw and pitch of the mirror so that the lasers are as together in the bottle as I can get them")

This is very important, and worth repeating. You want the beams aligned as close as you can get them, so that only a slight adjustment will be needed later for your '2nd step alignment'. (dots at distance)

Re: Custom 7 Color DIY Laser Kit

I have come up with an easy way to align the phr turning mirror. I will post instructions when I receive my kit and test it out for sure. It involves epoxying the mirror to a thin powerful rare earth magnet. After you do that place the mirror and magnet in position and place another magnet on the opposite side of the sled. Now the mirror is much easier to adjust(stays very stable during adjustment) and when you get everything aligned you can epoxy it in place.

Brilliant! can't wait to see the instructions.
