this is going to sound a bit strange but i "hear" electronics quite well. Been working with computers for many years now and at somepoint i just started to "hear" the flow of electricity in circuits. I don't think that it's been damaged either since that baby is burning like a pyromaniac at devils night (watch the Crow kids if you didn't make the quote).

Neo? Can you save me from the matrix? Next you will see 1’s and 0’s all around you. The force is strong with you! ;D

Well, it's just the same as how you can hear old CRT TVs when they are on, even if you're in another room and with the sound off. You can hear the hum of the electronics.

Same here, except he's more finely tuned and can hear smaller devices ;) (Or he's mentally unstable)

ummm both would be correct. Besides only poor people are mentally "unstable" us respectable folk only become "eccentric"

Ah, just wanted to comment on the high pitched whine. It's likely caused by the protection circuitry in Li (rcr123) batteries. The DDL driver (based on the LM317T) jay's using has no switching parts to cause a whine. Any pitch over 15 khz, like the whine from an old school crt tv (caused by the 15khz horizontal sweep) can be annoying. I'm guessing godmonkey is under 30 as by the time one reaches middle age (me) most people can't hear well above 12-15 khz.

good guess dude i'm 28

I'm interested in what kind of duty cycle you are sticking to, and how the LD is holding up at that current... Have you been using it much?

i've tried to keep it at the one minute on thing, but i must confess that sometimes when i'm having fun with it i forget. Especially in mid burn :p

I'd say it has taken the abuse pretty well. I've been casually carrying it in my pocket with me on the town, at parties and my girlfriend even spilled some water on it and it just keeps on kicking.
I'd say your build is pretty much the victorinox of burning DYI lasers. Can take almost any abuse and will serve well even under the harshest of use.

I'm not a hundred percent sure about the diode it seems to have lost some power but i suspect it more has to do with the fact that i'm getting used to it.

How visible is the beam supposed to be in normal lighting conditions?

I doubt the diode is dropping in power, I've never heard of this happening. The beam's visibility depends on a lot of things, and you probably wouldn't be able to see any difference in power unless there was a serious change.
Like you said, you must be getting used to it. The first time I ever saw the dot of a high powered laser I was very impressed, it seemed so bright. But now it just doesn't seem as bright as it was the first time, I have to shine my 5mW laser next to the dot of the high powered one so I can remember just how bright it really is. ;D

Yeah, we naturally adapt, and that's not always a good thing! :p My RPL Blue in the night looks so bright, looks like +100mW easily...until I bust out my 225!

P.S. There are many different types of electronic noise that can be herd by the human ear. Most involve high voltage though, like TV, or camera flash, but the ones powered by low voltage only deliver a split second charge release after build up. Most electronic sound is created from electromagnetic vibrations. The force is strong with anybody who can hear a laser's driver! And I bet that’s not the only strange “power” you have either! ;D

One more thing regarding the focus of the lens. According to my testing its not quite as sensitive as Jayrobs documentation states. In my laser the good focus for burning on short distance is pretty exactly on the opposite side of Jay's white mark he placed for the 5' focus. Just thought i'd share this for the other pyros out there with jays build (or similar)

with this focus it really transformed this from a plastic etching burner to a plastic devouring burner. Will post pics soon. The diff is huge
