Um, I'm not really sure what the diameter is, you'll just have to measure it. I'm wanting to say either 18 or 19mm, but I can't remember if I'm thinking of the inner threading, or the threading for the outer sleeve. The thread pitch is 1mm though.

Thanx for the thread pitch info Chris. I have a mill machine now...but no lathe.....mmmm......yet !! Perhaps Jayrob would do this heat sink. As the drawing shows...the pocket for the Axix module is offset from the HS centerline by .21 inches. This then compensates for the geometry shift encountered in using the prism's. With this design...you end up with a beam centerline which exits the HS at the center. I cannot see why this will not work ??? Only very minor issue is that your heat flow is not even 360 degree around the Axix unit...Oh well...I will just try it and see...the extra CU mass will suck away alot of heat....and the duty cycle will not be very long anyway !!!

It's not mass that makes a good heatsink. It's radiating surface area. While more mass means it takes longer to become heat saturated.. it still has to radiate that heat to the atmosphere, and to do that, the more surface area, the better. It's one of the reasons I started making PITA to make finned heatsinks instead of the more common solid slugs that fit inside hosts.

Yes...the goal is to get the heat away from the LD as efficiently as possible. The fin geometry goes a very long way in doing this !! The fins on the heat sink OD increase the surface area and dump the heat to atmosphere. This finned geometry is the BEST OD Heat sink choice.
Copper does conduct the heat away from LD more efficiently and quicker than Aluminum. CU has a thermal conductivity of 400 W/mK while Al weighs in at 255 W/mK. I agree that more mass will just operate as more thermal storage capacity....and that storage capacity is not what we are concerned about !!...we need to pull the heat away from the LD as quickly and efficiently as possible...and then dump that heat to the atmosphere !!
One good thing the oversized HS head provides is room for a pair of anamorphic prisms. I have experimented with these and have measured 7% transmission loss. The corrected beam has a 1.0 mRad divergence. This delivers a nice almost completely square output. I can live with this !!
One thing we can also improve on is the elimination of the Aixiz mount insert.
“For each interface between two objects in contact with each other, there will be a temperature drop across the interface”.
Even with thermal paste between the Aixiz unit and the heat sink….we still do not have as efficient transfer as could be achieved with a direct mount. Possibly a socket geometry within the heat sink... that makes full contact with all the side surfaces of the LD….and then a threaded screw on back plate that would be bored out so the backside C/A hookup could be done. So…the LD would fit snuggly against the socket and then would be secured in place with the screw on back plate. Of course the output end of this socket would also need to be threaded to allow for placement of the Collimination lens.
While many of these features may be desirable….can they be done with enough economy as to be affordable for more than one of a kind unit ???? Well…a one of a kind I will build…eventually !!!

Fine, i'll bump it then. :na:

I'll hopefully have a few more of these hosts available before too much longer. And possibly a couple more complete lasers for sale as well. Just now finally able to sort of get back into the swing of thing laser wise again.. had too much life piled on me for most of this year so far.
