Default Specks in laser diode

Hi this is my first post on LPF and I have know about this place for awhile and am so happy that there is a site so full of great info and kind people. Sorry if I ask any noobish things but I think I did my research.

I have a laser I built awhile ago and works just fine. It is a 658nm laser diode(can type) with original lens that came with the aixiz module. Its all good but when ever I put it way out of focus I can see a bunch of specks in the spot of the light. I know its not the lens because I've air cleaned the it from both sides. Is there a way to get rid of them without damaging the diode ?
thank you

The diode can be cleaned.
Sometimes dust and stuff will settle on the window of the can.
I clean it with cotton swabs, alcohol, and a gentle touch.

Well it works with alcohol. Cotton swaps are too big for this work. I folded a piece of lens paper so that it has a sturdy tip in the corner. Make sure you don't touch the tip during the folding with your hand. Dip the tip in alcohol and gentle wipe the diode glass with it. Usually I see zero specks in the output of the diode.

You sure because they say that you don't even want to touch the lens of the diode b/c of how fragile it is ?

The diode glass is quite thick. Just don't push it too hard to become loose from the can..

Default Re: Specks in laser diode

To completely be sure that the specs are the diode window and not the focusing lens, try rotating the lens while the laser is on, and shining the output on the wall. If the specs rotate with the lens, then you'll need to clean the lens better. I've always had good luck with some 91% isopropyl from the store and clean, 100% cotton, swabs. Barely use pressure, and only swipe in one direction, one time per swab tip, to keep from rubbing contaminants from the lens back onto the lens, or worse, scratching the lens with the contaminants embedded in the swab.
