I think you are all overreacting. Yes, close-up exposure to a lot of IR will cause damage. But this is the IR from a 5mW pen, and if the crystals were misaligned when he dropped it, it's not going to be full IR output. It's likely only the amount of extra IR that wasn't filtered, which would be 60-80% of however much green there was.
