I think if you mention to them what it is, the moment they hear "laser" they won't want it on the plane. Those who are unfamiliar with lasers immediately shun them away as "dangerous". The average person believes a dinky 5mW red pen laser can blind them instantly and give them cancer. Don't bring it on the plane with you. JUST DON'T!

Throw it in a pelican case and toss it in with your checked luggage. A cavity search wouldn't be worth it.
On a related subject, if they were going to give you a cavity search and you dropped a deuce right there in front of them, would they still have cause to continue?
I might try that if ever there was a need ^_^

I say you walk up the customer service desk, slam the fusion kit on the counter and say "Give me all your money!"

but seriously....walk up to the counter, and simply ask......

Then if things back fire you can tell them to suck on it because you asked beforehand.

It's not illegal to own, and you aren't operating it in public. There's nothing to be afraid of.

why do that, when you can put it in your check on luggage? They just don't want you to be able to retrive a knife while in flight from any carry on luggage. If the knife is in the check on luggage, you can not get to it during a flight, unless your Super Man! Oh, I just got It, you are joking of corse! Priority flate rate would work for me!

you can just put it in your checked luggage

I learned a tip from a pro photographer who kept getting his equipment stolen especially traveling over seas - he would get a "starter pistol" that shoots blanks and keep it unloaded, you tell the airlines you have to declare a weapon in the luggage and you are all set

reason being is that there is no way that the airlines are going to loose a bag that has a weapon in it, you can be assured that not only will it not be opened by baggage handlers because they are not allowed because of the weapon in there so it gets special treatment and is never ever lost - someone actually has to get it on the other end and hand it to you so it never goes through the baggage conveyor belt

he still does this after 9-11 with no problems
