How strong does a laser pointer have to be to burn?

I was wondering;

Could someone possibly link me to a website on Amazon to a laser pointer which is strong enough to burn through paper with ease, possibly balloons and plastic bags? I don't mind the color nor the price.

I no longer buy any lasers on Ebay. No it has nothing with me having my nose in the air and wanting a laser for the upper class.

Almost all lasers on Ebay/Amazon are junk *Not as powerful as ad states, poorly made, fragile, short life, plastic (melting lens)

Even worse, any laser sold on Amazon/Ebay over 5mw without safety locking systems is technically being sold in violation of respective site policy.

Want a good burning laser?

I recommend building your own, "Survival Laser" "DTR" *both site sponsors can be found with a search or in site links* SL offers a C6 host and DTR offers 20mm modules that are easy to install.

If you can handle soldering 2 wires in spots that are more than 1/8" in size the build should be easy for you. You'll have what you want and you will have built it yourself.

If you want to pop balloons a 405 Blue Ray laser from DTR is hard to beat *gaussian Beam Profile (Round) not multimode (square/rectangle)*. (this wavelength is into the UV, even casual splash without eye pro can cause cataracts over time)

IMHO ANY BURNING LASER SHOULD BE TREATED WITH THE RESPECT AND CAUTION YOU WOULD EXTEND TO A FIREARM.

Any laser that can burn paper can instantly and forever blind you, you can find news articles all about that. Shining them at planes/cars/out your back door in a city can get you arrested.


Not a joke, not a toy. Stay safe, become part of the forum and not just a hit and run "where can I find the laser I want" one time poster.

Before you try burning anything you must get a pair of laser safety glasses that attenuate the wavelength you are working with, not only do you need to be protected from an accidental specular reflection, but also the diffuse reflection.

That is just looking at the burning spot can and will cause damage to your eyes if you have a laser strong enough to burn or over 5mw, granted you are not going to burn very much with a 25mw laser, but it's enough to burn your retina because your eyes lens focuses the light that enters onto a much smaller spot on your retina, and your most detail vision is due to a small area called the fovea, a small damaged spot in your fovea can ruin most of your detail vision, so don't risk it, buy the proper laser safety glasses before you burn anything.

Using appropriate optics a 5 mW can burn.

I was thinking the same thing, a low power laser focused to a tiny spot, if using the correct optics, can burn too. Laser diodes which have tiny emitters are easier to focus that way to produce a very high power density. Think diodes used for read write computer disks, i.e. BDR-209 16X 405 nm laser diode, but that particular diode can produce a lot more than 5 mw.

What is the deal with all these posts by people who have just signed on here asking for either a burning laser or the most powerful laser with no other information about who they are and what knowledge they already have about lasers in general? I am put off by new members who may know nothing at all about the dangers involved to themselves and others wanting to have a "cool" high power laser. Maybe it's just me.

A laser should be strong enough to bench press at least its own body weight in order to burn.

My opinion on a fair number of these newbies with questions like that are they aren't a bunch of newbies, an oldie who amuses himself getting members to respond to him using multiple accounts, sometimes their member name gives a clue when so many of them appear to be off the cuff with no thought put into them. If someone were to track how many have come and gone, posted once and then gone silent, I think the number of them over the last few months would surprise us. Although the moment I say that and think a particular member is one of those, I'm proven wrong but i still think this kind of thing is going on here.
