Welcome to my first post ;) umm well im a newbie to this laser buisness, but i want to biuld a basic 100- 300mw red laser from the diode in a dvd rw drive;(or if i can get the diode from ebay without ridiculous 12-24 day delivery that would be better) but in order for it to work do i need to match the nm of the diode to the nm of the driver? i have all of the basics figured since im rather effiecient at getting info on stuff such as this- but i would be extremely grateful if someone could either tell me how to figure the nm of a diode- or give me a list of ebay links for all the stuff i would need to build one e.g a 100-300mw diode, blank aixiz module, and THE RIGHT DRIVER for the diode in relevance. I live in the UK by the way :)

Many Thanks,

Welcome to the LPF forum !

The wavelength of the diode and the driver doesn't need to match. The driver depends on your battery configuration. A host with one 3.7V battery needs a different driver than with two batteries. Unless you have a buck/boost driver which can handle almost any configurations.

In your case with the red 100-300mW diode go with a linear driver like Jibs, Mohgash, Ghostchrome, etc. You will need two Li-Ion batteries.

thankyou for your much appreciated help mr Blord :) after browsing on ebay for linear drivers i have found this : 300mW+ 650nm (658nm) RED Laser Diode Module DIY | eBay -sorry about this, was just wondering if this piece looks acceptable, i was under the impression that 4x 1.5volt non rechargables would utterly nuke most diodes?? if you were a newbie who wanted to purchase a homebuilt laser until he felt more comfortable about building one himself, would you buy it? (excluding personal preferences of mw, laser colour etc)

Thanks again,

Hey !! Welcome to lpf..
I would suggest you buy a fully working laser for $45 if thats what you are about to spend.

EDIT: Another option would be this one
http://www.lazorlabs.com/GhostDrive2/p982550_5678024.aspx
Buy the GhostDrive to, Set the desired current to 395mA

http://www.lazorlabs.com/index.aspx?pageid=982546
This is a 20x LPC-815 very famous among the DIY first builds and enthusiasts alike.

The next thing you'll need is aixiz module to press the diode right in and attach some leads to the driver..
Power it on , and Happy lasing!!!
Dont forget to buy safety goggles for it..

here is a very nice pair, and its a Pre-Requisite of the hobby!!
