Liteon 4X BluRay diode - any experience?

I've got violet laser fever now. I made a pointer using a bluray diode (from an xbox hd) just to have something to do. I didn't realize I'd fall in love with the color :D

Now I want more power. I'm hoping to get something good for between 20-50 mW - not an overdriven ps3 diode. I was looking at the Liteon 4X drive, which is under $150.00 (my budget). Anyone have any experience with this diode, or know what it might be good for?

That looks like its a read-only drive, which means the diode would only be about as good as the ps3 diode. You need one that can write to blu-ray discs

Right, but since it's a 4x bluray reader I'm assuming, along with the higher price, the diode is a bit more powerful. I'm looking for something in the 20-50 mW range. The Xbox will read HD discs, but not very fast and they would certainly advertise if it was faster than 1-2x.

It's a bit of a gamble, but there are now a lot of bluray drives hitting the market. I will have a brighter bluray (eventually), I'd rather someone else take the plunge first :) $150.00 would be a painful mistake if I blew it.

i'd say you'd only get 20mW absolute max, even then it may be pushing it. Reader diodes even in fast drives are only about 5-10mW The only thing you need power for is actually etching the data onto the disc.

It would be more worth it to save your money for a bit and get a nice burner dive (heck even then the price may go down)

First off nothing is being 'etched' by the laser, it's tweaking a dye on the disc. That's why the reliability of burned dvds not so good over time, unlike a pressed disc. A 4x reader is going to require a more powerful diode than a regular speed reader, tho I agree 'burners' would likely require the most powerful diode.

I don't think the difference between a PS3 sled and a 4x reader drive is worth the price difference. At least get a 2X writer...How much is one of those? :-/

Gus, Mario, and Switch are right. A reader drive won't do the trick. I have made one from a 2 X drive (Sony BWU-100A), and have it running at 63mW's. But that drive cost just as much as the 6 X writer. Save up for the LG - GGW-H20L:

The diode from this drive has been accurately tested and graphed here:

If you harvest one of these drives, it is very important for you to know that the pin connection is different:

Well worth the extra money spent on the 6 X drive...
