Laser 66/ PLTB450B/Pen

Hi Folks,
Had this hanging around for a while and decided to build it. Take it i never built one of these before, so tiny and intricate it took some time cause of my fat fingers but i got it. To fit the copper module snug, i pressed a small piece of driver wire between the host and module no soldering. This is a case negative build super easy. In it is:
PLTB450B diode
Drive set to 1.8mA
G2 Lens
2-10440 effect cells
Modified tail cap with small spacer for contact..

Was the module a nice tight fit for that host? I recently got some pen hosts from china but the Aixiz modules didn't sit tight in them, which caused all sort of issues for me. Would like to do another pen build if I can find some quality parts!

Hi D,
The way i fit the module in the host was i cut a piece of wire for the drivers we use. And i pressed the module in with the wire between the host and module nice tight fit to .
Like it had a set screw in it it was easy and worked perfectly. Tighter than a bull frogs but and thats water proof LOL. Sorry had to add that it's an old saying ..oh you have to strip the insulation off the wire first and twist it tight so it doesn't unravel.

Thanks for looking very much appreciated my brother. Glad you like it, i just got done ordering 2 more pens but in chrome this time. This time it will be a green 520nm and a red 638nm .

Clean build!

What's the heat management like?

Hi Will well the only heat sink is the CU module, the pen host it's self is thin brass.
As you can see in the pic the PLTB450B is running a lot of mW's. At 30 seconds it gets little warm but not hot so i'm satisfied with that being such a small host. Thats not bad for a high power pen build. I like to experiment and go the extra yard.

30 seconds sounds perfectly reasonable!

Perhaps you could stretch out the runtime to 1 minute :eg:

Hi Will,
Thats sound very reasonable from his LPM reading yes that's possible being mine is running under 1500mW's, I will check it out tomorrow i have a stop watch from what i calculate the time.After xmas i will be getting a 7W LPM with data logging. My Ophir now reads out too 5W's and over but no logging. Thanks pal for the awesome info now that makes me think.

Hi BT,
This wash my first real pen build it was hanging out for a while. so i threw in a diode and driver i had sitting around. When i pressed the button t was alive . Now i'm hooked on these small pens. Well i went online and ordered two more in chrome. Hey the duty cycle isn't bad at all for such a high powered diode. considering the heat sink is only the module.
I have other pen host that Sinner and Ehgumus made me but these are tiny compared to them.

IMO its hard to buy from China a true 12mm blank module--
even AixiZ is too loose-- here is my solution-I keep all old radio antennas-between ech section these is two copper shims-bigger towards the base --smaller towards the tip-
these keep the sections from coming apart- they are already curved-so two or three may fit spaced apart (not stacked)if add a tiny bit of thermal grease which makes a good contact and help you slid the copper in place-- while I have never tested how well tis works VS just a perfect fit (no shims) I find it VERY hard to believe that there is any significant difference between the two -- you may find other even thinner pieces of copper and I also dont think that using aluminum foil would also be a bad idea--
GreenMechanic turned me on to backless AixiZ blank modules .. he removes the part where the wires come out thru a hole--doing this allows more air to enter & makes for better cooling. Easy to do with a drill.

The copper shims are a great concept , i have a piece of CU at 1/6 thick, I'll use that on my next . I'll peen the CU down to the thickness i need to fit. Add thermal compound as a lube.
The AL foil i thought of that it's a conductor . I have two more pens coming . These are chrome so i can try out your concept . As for the open back module I been doing that for the higher builds. I heard about this sometime back ,and started doing that. And it's very effective at that. Good choice hands down, Thank you for checking out my build. Glad to hear your comments and opinions. All are logical indeed...
