Try this, if you haven't discovered it before

Hi,

I discovered a cool effect in glass when it is exposed to a moving violet laser light. If you look at the light spot that hits the glass in a mirror or in a regular window, then try to move the laser around on the surface when it's dark, but still focus your eyes on the small violet spot that moves around. Then, when it is completely dark, you'll clearly see an amber colored light tail that follows the violet dot as it moves around!

I have already discovered that some fully transparent glass materials is glowing when it's exposed to violet light, when I once used a special glass collimator lens in this laser, as I did see that the glass itself glowed amber-orange (Also redish and greenish, depending on glass material) when I turned on the laser, but I did not know that the glass material did keep alive that light for so long after the violet light was turned off or moved to another location on the glass surface.

I tried to take a video and a picture of my new discovery, but the 405nm light, even that it doesnt seems so bright with my eyes, it was far too bright for the digital camera to see the light tail. So sorry for that - you just have to try it live. If you have an orange filter, you can use that to block the violet light so only the flourecent light tail will remain.

It is amazing how many things fluoresce with these lasers. I was shining one around in a bathroom with tile walls the other day and the laser was leaving a trail on the tiles. I think it was like a marble tiling. Tube TV screens when turned off work well too.

My last car had some kind of "lining accent rubber stripping" in EVERY crease of the car "inside" like all the places two panels meet on the door, or around the air vents.

The lining was white, so was the inside of my car, but for SOME reason, when i shined my old 4x on the lining, or near it, it would flouresce and stay flouresced for quite some time. there was also a "traveling" effect once i turn the laser off, the glow creeps outward away from the point of origin.

Pretty neat to shine it on as much of the striping as i could, and then step back. my car has a slight slight eerie glow to it. i thought it was neat :D

Yeah, somebody mention this effect sometime ago but thanks for reminding me cuz its really facinating. I believe the first post to mention this was using a glass mirror.

just tryed it with Skippy and nothing :cryyy: hahaha. I have seen the effect of the orange trailing glow in some glass windows pains it dose not work with all glass though. I have a 8" crystal ball and when I shine my BR into it the beam bounces around inside as a nice green color and comes out again as a purple beam. theres a shot of it in my picture albums here at LPF.

Peace All...

Thats weird I tried it and there is a faint pail blue trail (if I remember correctly). Try putting the laser on the jar like touching it that's how I did it and try it in a dark room it was a really light trail when I did it you could miss it easily. I dont remember what brand peanut butter I had either I dont know if that will make a difference either.

Just don't shoot it at an LCD, SXRD or DLP (maybe even Plasma) TV or monitor. Lasers are known to blow pixels. I not certain about a CRT; but would still be wary of possible damage. Bill

it shouldn't bother a CRT, unless you have a laser powerfull enough to burn the phosphor coatng inside. I beleive phosphor is a high temp subtance so it would take a laser of several watts to do this IMHO.
