Welcome to the LPF. I saw your thread on the 1 watt green laser. How old is your son? That is a dangerously powerful laser and is not a toy to be used by children. You will need a good pair of laser goggles for everyone who will be watching this thing. It is far from eye safe and it only takes less than a microsecond to lose vision permanently. Please read more and be safe.

Welcome to LPF, bondic. There are many nice and knowledgeable people here who’ll be happy to listen and to help you. Please take the previous warnings offered by very experienced laser enthusiasts extremely seriously. Safety is always the chief concern when using any laser. As Paul indicated, permanent eye damage (and blindness) can result from beam exposure many times faster than a human can blink. Everyone present in a “science experiment” must have proper eye protection. Eye protection includes, but isn’t limited to, wearing proper lenses. You also need to research the laws and regulations of laser use in your area, as they differ widely across geographic areas. You will also need permission of school administrators, teachers and probably parents. Proper warning signs and beam containment measures are other likely requirements, all of which will be at your personal expense. I applaud your desire to help your son present an exciting laser demonstration, but urge you to please learn much more about using them safely. Thanks, and Take Care.

While I appreciate and understand your words of warning, please believe me when I say that I have taken all of the necessary safety precautions and am very well aware of the strength of a 1 watt laser. I understand and am adhering to the laws and regulations governing laser use in my area. I am not going to hand my son such a device and send him out to play with his friends on a Friday evening. It is quite frankly frustrating and off-putting that many here instantly assume that I don't understand how strong a 1 watt laser is and that I need to "read more" about laser safety and regulations. I can assure you that I have spent a great deal of time researching lasers lately and was initially quite hesitant to even let my son create such an experiment. However, he's been expressing interest in studying physics and lasers in university for quite some time now, and I want to encourage him as much as possible. I appreciate and understand your words of warning, but I am beginning to feel rather unwelcome here. Really, if I were the type of person to disregard laser safety, I probably wouldn't have taken the time to create an account on such a forum in order to research and seek advice from laser experts. I would probably just have purchased some garbage from WickedLasers and called it a day. So thanks for the warnings, but trust me: there will be no damaged retinas on my watch. :thanks:

I assure you, no one is trying to offend you. I only gave you a warning because we see kids joining these forums and often their first remark is "I like to do dangerous things". I studied physics in college and I can certainly understand you wanting to encourage your son. Please don't take offense to any warnings. It comes from years of hearing and seeing accidents that have happened with lasers. If you are trying to learn about lasers this is the best place to start. :yh:

Sorry it seems that some people are being offensive, it may come across that way but it's meant with good intentions. We do get a lot of people here that don't take safety as seriously as yourself.

Please don’t take offense to advice offered by forum members. We’re a collegial group of laser enthusiasts dedicated to sharing information about lasers and related technology. Member experience ranges from novice to electronic engineer levels, and safety is always our chief concern. Many beginners fail to learn proper safety before procuring a laser, often a very high power one. I’m not implying that you fall into this category. I admire your dedication to help your son with his science demonstration, and wish you both well. Please Take Care and be laser safe.
