Hi LPF. Excited to join!

I am an undergrad mechanical engineer which means I don't learn a whole lot about lasers in class. That doesn't mean I don't like lasers though! I have liked them since I was ~8 y/o and on one or two occasions I have used lasers for sensing or alignment. I was limited to 5mw for a while which made for some pretty funny attempts at burning/popping a balloon (LOL!). I have owned quite a few poorly built lasers. They are mostly gone now. Styropyro helped me discover DTR's laser shop and from there I discovered LPF. Such a goldmine! For now I am a bit scared of high powered lasers. One reason I joined LPF is because it seems LPF has a unique body of knowledge, and also an all-seeing eye on the laser market.

Happy to be here!

Welcome and enjoy the forum.

Study up on laser safety ---see excellent web site on all aspects of same here: Laser Pointer Safety - A comprehensive resource, for safe and responsible laser use

Good Laser Hazard Chart is here---have a look/see: http://www.lasersafetyfacts.com/resources/FAA---visible-laser-hazard-calcs-for-LSF-v02.png

Thanks for the resources!:yh: The first one I had totally forgotten existed and the second one is completely new to me (I had read through it like two years ago and hadn't visited the site since). I had mostly relied on the wikipedia laser safety site and related links. I own two pairs of safety glasses that I got tested at like OD 3.5-4 or so (but not for anything above green) which is easily enough to handle my 10mw violet laser (with divergent optics, lol) and much more. I also calculate the concerning MPE values when working with anything much more than that. So I am probably more fearful than is good for me. I have worked with a 1.5w laser in a dark room before though, and that was super scary to me! Good thing I only need a few mw for what I like to do!

WELL SAID!! add the other 'eye' is watching for safe use..

LPS.org needs to be read by all- but not so much for you-- still interesting read for new members who had not-- I think you wil fit right in..welcome.

SHOULD you want to know MORE about laser safety I have thread--here:
https://laserpointerforums.com/f51/lso-laser-safety-officer-tutorial-88136.html

lots of LSOs- medical- research- etc- afaik a low percent of LSO are for Laser Shows-- big companies have one or two LSO around somewhat-- to follow the regs- train the laser crew- make the showplan or go to court to defend the show when they get sued.

We have some fine members up your way-- making one or any of the many LEMs is highly recommended- try for Newton N.C.> for (aug) the best ever 3+ day meet-- SELEM <google that)

you wont want to miss another after just one SELEM.. :tsk:

again-- welcome!! Len

Welcone to LPF, Laseometer, very nice introduction!

Have fun, stay safe, and enjoy your stay!

Don't forget to take advantage if the "custom search" bar located at the bottom of the pages, there is a wealth of laser related information to be found there.

Welcome to the LPF, Lasometer! There are many nice and knowledgeable people here who’ll be happy to listen and to help you whenever possible. Thanks for your excellent introduction! You can also use the Search button on the bottom of each page for access to our extensive database for information about all things laser. Our chief concern is about safety, so please remember to always protect yourself and others. Be sure to use proper vision protection and never point a laser at any living thing. Lasers are wonderful and interesting, but please always remember to be laser safe. Take Care. :D
