About a week ago, I made a PS3 diode Blu-Ray.
It worked at for about an hour, but then died. It was only a faint blue, last week.

Today I turned it on and it was red.
My Blu Ray diode is lasing red.
What. The. Fu¢k.

It is similar to a maxed out 16x in terms of brightnes.

Does anyone have any idea why?

Hmm somehow it has made contact with the red die somehow, perhaps when the violet die failed.

...I ran out of heat shrink tubing a while ago, so it does not have any on the pins.
So the + wire disconnected and is now on another pin, which will make red?
…does that mean PS3 diodes can be used to make a very cheap bluray–red laser?

Yeah, they're three diodes in one. Red, BR, and IR stacked on top of eachother. Running the BR and red at the same time makes a nice magenta that's impossible to focus properly, though it looks pretty... Unfortunately it causes heat issues and causes it to burn out pretty easily.

I have one that does the same thing: red light out when driving the violet pin. It was like that when I extracted it from the sled. The sled was advertised as a reject, so I'm not surprised. Mine's definitely shorted/misconnected inside, though, as I've been very careful to solder to the correct pins, and I have a couple others that work correctly, so I know I'm not using the wrong pin.

interesting! i'd love to have seen your face when it lased red! :-P

ah, the ps3 sled.. how it all began.. i was rarely that excited (in my laser-hobby) as i was when i found out about this, bought some sleds (3x 80$ or something! heh) and finally saw violet for the first time! :-)
have a look here for much info, they were the first to explore this, as far as i know, thats where i learned about the sled:
