I think the in-depth study of chemical (and biochemical) reactions in real time... very interesting

It's very difficult to cause population inversion at such short wavelengths like extreme uv and x-ray. The first x-ray laser is much older though (~1980), they used a nuclear explosion underground to make the x-ray pump.
