If anybody knows if I could use the burner diode out of a Panasonic DMR-E50 it would help me out alot. This is my first post so just let me know if somebody else has ever asked this. I've been reading on this site for a while now and I must say it is "the place" to find out anything to do with lasers. I love this place! Definitley the most informative site I've ever seen. I mean you guys make it to where even people with absolutely zero background in electronics (not me) able to understand what it takes to make there own laser and really make it an interesting learning experience in the process. Sorry for going on like this it's just that...u guys ROCK! laser

While it probably does have a red laser diode in it, it will most likely be of rather low power as I doubt it's faster than a 1X or 2X burner.

If you're asking because you have a dead E50, then I'd say you should go for it. It will teach you a lot about laser diodes. But I wouldn't suggest tearing it apart if it is still working.

Why do they put so low power diodes in them? :-?

i guess they dont want to shell out the extra dough since its not really necessary since the fastest it would have to burn is at realtime. yea thats kind of the thought i had too. it was from a dead one that i had the chance to get but i wouldnt want to really harvest from something that low powered. i pretty much learned what to do when i ripped apart my extra lite on 8x burner that i had sitting around. i got my aixiz case in a few days ago (next time im just going to drop by aixiz...i live like 15 minutes away :D) and took me about 15 minutes to blow the original <5mw diode it came with. so i popped out the old diode and tried to stick in one of the 8x lasers and now im waiting for epo (better deals than radio shack) to open so i can make a driver but im pretty sure that i might have messed up both of these diodes. so i think my next best step is to buy a couple diodes from stonetek and wait for my flashlight to come in from dx
