which burner should i buy?

can it be used with 4 aa batteries and DDL Driver? and will reverse polarity kill the laser diode outright?

I need to know which dvd burner is better

a sony NEC 20x
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827118011
or
is this better than the sony
LG 20x

also would the DDL be good for this project.
also would a 6 volt battery be enough to power it up even though it says it needs 7.2 volts

Not sure about the Sony, although the Sony Nec Optiarc 7190 is a great DVD burner to extract diodes from but it looks like Newegg doesn't have them in stock at the moment. I'm not sure about the LG either, people have extracted long open can diodes from LG 20x and 18x burners but I don't know the exact burner.
This drive does have a long open can diode in it.

A DDL driver needs 7v+ to drive a red laser diode so 4 AAs won't do. Reverse voltage won't kill it because the DDL driver uses a 1N4001 diode for polarity protection.

for what it's worth, the LG GSA H22L 18x does *not* contain a long open can. I just found this out the hard way.
