Where to get the specs for all the various dvd lasers

How does one find the electrical specs on a dvd laser - for example if you receive and old machine, sometimes it not even obvious to me what the speed of the dvd writer is or anything about its laser.

Try searching the dvd drives company. Maybe their website will have information.

If all else fails, a variable current/variable voltage bench power supply, a clamp on heat sink, a pencil, and some paper is a good start ( a decent optical power meter is nice too).
It's gonna be tough finding manufacturers datasheets when you can't even get a part number for the diode.
