This can be done and will fit because of the shape of the diodes themselves but will require a little dremel work on the back of the diode housing and the emitters are side by side with hardly any gap... ready for a cheap 400mw+ red laser through a glass lens! This may not be a totally correct way to do it but hey 400mw focusable to burn oh yeah!

Damage during cutting, excess heat buildup, catastrophic optical damage, destructive interference, there are so many ways I can see this failing spectacularly, even without talking about focus/optics.

Let me assure you that if building a laser diode twice as powerful was as simple as sticking two dies beside each other in the case, lasers would be a lot cheaper.

Then do it and post the pix..

This is going to fail, do it the proper way and use a PBS !

It won't work that way AT ALL.  The way the diodes are designed and the way the optics are design will make two low-powered funky uncollimated blobs of light.  Do some more research, there was someone who posted in a few different threads the right way to do it using 50 diodes I think.  You can do it with 2. This is not a bad concept but it lacks hard planning and formula.  If you're going to do it, continue this thread with your progress.
