Just wanted to show how bad a beam Ive ended up with from this 17 watt diode, when its focused, it is really awesome though. There is another lens inside the laser case that you cant see.

Can you convert them to WMV ? I am afraid one more freaking codex, and this whole PC will die...so tired of plugins ! If you can't do it, no biggie.

Re: Totaly Un-collimatable Really Divergent LD vid

get VLC ;), it will play them without installing any codecs... video lan client, the best player ive ever seen... the video is divx... I dont have anything to convert it with, the camera takes the videos in this format. Just google vlc.
it will even play broken and incomplete files that would make wmp lock up.

It'd help a lot if you burned the other side (or sharpied it)

Or was "burning a white surface" the point?

Re: Totaly Un-collimatable Really Divergent LD vid

I was showing the beam in the first vid, and the other was a focused dot on white, yes, that was the point... it burns through in a very short time.

Is there any way to get a sort-of paralel beam out of that, or is the laser stack just too large to come even close?

Btw, it sounds like those old vaccuum cleaners ;)

LOL! It has a very over the top fan in it because I wanted to make sure it stays cool!  The diodes maximum case temp is 30c. I can actually slow the fan down as it is a case fan2 from thermaltake. as far as getting a colimated beam, I havnt been able to do that yet, but if its possible, Ill eventually get it. Senkat said I need a GRIN LENS for it, and have been looking for one, if it works, it would be amazing at night, but the thought of aiming it in the air makes me really nervous...

OK, for those that cant see the divx videos, I have converted them so you can now enjoy them... Senkat, I hope u like them!

and here is where I have another lens in front to focus it down.

i LOVE that one! watch the "reflection" at the side of the laser, where the lens projects back the light:
first white as IR, then turns orange as the charcoaled paper starts to get red glowing, then white again as the laser burns completely through the paper. :-)

the output looks pretty nice. put a grin lens, or a cylindrical lens in front of it to get it somewhat round, and two lenses set up like a telescope (or a real telescope). you definitely can make a collimated beam from it, perhaps no super-thin one though.. ;-)

oh, and.. where can i find more threads about that monster? tried to find it in your postings-list in your profile, but there are only the last 25 posts..

well, I would post some more about it, except it died yesterday, :-[ I dont know why it died.  It was my first try at a bigger diode than the 2w, it seems that maybe static zaped it, thats the only thing I can guess...  the power supply was set for 21 amps (full 17w is 27amps) and I noticed a drop in output yesterday morning, then after a while, I noticed it steadily went downhill from that point on... ouch... that was en expensive diode to loose too. I might get another one when I figure out what killed this one. Now that I think about it, it never acted like it was doing a full 10 watts, wich it should have at that current. I think it was a used diode and was at the end of its life to begin with. after it got so bad that it couldnt cut tape, I disected it, and made some videos of the inside of the diode. It still fires up, but its weak like a 100mw dvd diode now. I also noticed after I disected it, that it was only drawing 10 amps from the power supply.

Another very likely possibility is that it caught a reflection from the lens I was trieng to use to collimate it. oh well, its not that bad because it wasnt the best laser anyway. I just wish I knew what had caused it to start going downhill... I used it for 3 weeks with no problems.
I also used a scope to look at the power supply and it is realy stable.. no surges or anything I can see... I riped out the fiber stuff and played a little with it after that, then my blurays came in the mail :D, so I put this one in a box in the closet and built the blu ray!
