super dumb ass question - what is an ir filter

Ok I know your probably laughing but I am BRAND NEW to lasers and I just wanted to clarify what a IR filter is.
My understanding is that it is something this is on a laser that filers ir rays ( lol probably completely wrong ) so you don't loose sight in your eyes.
I am probably really wrong as I mentioned before if so could some one please explain what an IR filter is.

You could've done a simple search.The info is everywhere ::) But oh well....you're pretty much right.It's a piece of glass(or something) that doesn't let near infrared pass through, and is sometimes(or all the time?) coated for anti reflection for green,yellow,red, or blue in DPSS lasers to minimize the power loss in the desired wavelength.

This IR leaking from the DPSS process is especially dangerous with highpowered lasers where the IR is also pretty high in power.Especially when you use goggles and think you are safe but you're actually getting a lot of IR exposure.

An IR filter is only used in DPSS lasers ( Diode Pumped solid state ) DPSS lasers use an IR diode to pump a set of crystals which change the IR light into green light. Some of this IR however escapes through the crystals, and since you cant see it can go in your eyes without you knowing it and damage them. The IR filters the IR out so it doesnt emit from the laser ( along side the wanted visible laser light ) though IR light doesnt follow the same path as the visible laser light so you never know where it will go.

Its basically just for safety .

Ahhh! So if you have a B-R for instance there's no IR leakage?
 
Well diodes do produce IR in the form that is HEAT  ;D But its not dangerous unless you touch and its been on for hours and you then get burnt !

You get burnt from direct heat transfer if you touch it, not because of the IR it emits(ie, radiant heat) :P But yea, I guess everything above 0K emits IR ::)
 
;D I have been burnt from " Direct heat transfer " off a 5mW red diode that I removed from a DVD player , guess it was a bad idea taking it out the heatsink, running it for 30 seconds then touching it ::) . Suppose its not as bad as dripping solder on your hand ;D .

the thing is that as cold said and other members did, if we restricted access to the forums only to members, guests couldnt view anything if they didnt subscribe....so that'd take away a lot of lurkers
