Not much info on the laser but thought it was neat.

Jets don't use lasers for communication... They use them for target designators, as an actual weapon or as defense such as LAIRCM.

For the ones they are using, I'd imagine they are 5-10mW red or IR such as those seen in data networks. They are just removing the cable requirements..

Innovative DIYers have been doing this for decades. Optical point-to-point networking. Although back then, it was somehow more cost-effective to use LEDs and giant aspherics or fresnels. Because giant aspheric or fresnel lenses are very cheap...? hehehe

I wish I could find the webpage, it was neat seeing this cool device being used in some crappy city in Africa, I think.
