still need to know the LED






Hard to tell without a data sheet, with some luck you can find a number/code on the back of the emitter and google it. I'm 90% sure it's 6.84V, 700mA Luxeon LED. Does the flashlight have a driver or resistor, can you post a picture of it?

Try to light the emitter with two AA/AAA batteries (3V), if it glows a little or pretty bright its a 3.42V, 1400mA LED. If it doesn't light up at all, its probably 6.84V, 700mA.
 
It has a resistor on the main silicon chip that connects to the batteries. Thats it. There is not main driver.
 
Comes with a 2.4 ohm 1 watt resistor, at least the ones i received and used as hosts.

The emitter is a luxeon-3, powers from 3.7 volts and should take 700 mA for normal operation (does require cooling, mind you).
 
That's seems right, the chips looks too small to be a luxeon-5.
Why is it a luxeon-3 (stands for 3W) when the description says 5W?
 
So if I wanna use these in my own stuff do I need a driver or would I be fine just using a resistor and a proper heatsink?

Overly optimistic specs i guess, just like they sell 30 mW lasers as 50 mW and such. Also, the luxeon 3 is not very efficient by todays standards, so light output is somewhat dissapointing. It is still a very useable flashlight, but i retrofitted one with a cree Q5 and better driver, world of difference... but then again, that thing is brighter than your average 6 cell maglite ;)

It is most definitely not a luxeon V, as that has a hexagonal emitter area, and also takes double the supply the supply voltage.
 
I just got these from making my lasers using the mxdl host so I don't wanna waste them. Im thinking of making a flashlight with 3 switches. one turns one LED on. the next the second. and the third is like 20 UV LED's.
 
It might take a few months since im currently working on an energy plan that could get patoned but ya eventually.
