Just saw something in the Hackaday.com feed, that might interest you guys:
Some guys in Japan built a system they call "Sticky Light". Basically, it's a laser scanner, using a single photodetector, to look for dark objects, and stick to them. Since there is no imaging involved, tracking can be very fast, and power consumption is very low, with the diode consuming only 0.5mW.
