I just opened up a DVD RW 16X and i got the diode. GREAT:o. Now what current should i operate it at? How do i get the Model number thing? It is LG brand

Unlees the diode can be positively identified then you are playing russian roulette.

This is why most people here will recommend a Dilda, LOC (Long Open Can) from the LPC Sled or a LCC (Long Closed Can) from the GGW sled.

They have been tried and tested and are relatively cheap (and powerfull)

If I was to take a 'safe' guess I would say 100-150mah for your diode.

Ya I saw a 24X double layer DVD burner. Does that mean there are 2 diodes inside? and its 24X so how many mW can it output with a reasonable lifetime? 1000 hrs?
HP - 24x Internal Double-Layer DVD±RW/CD-RW Drive - DVD1260i

That drive is $50, the most powerfull red diodes that I listed above (LOC & LCC) are around $10 and can be safely run (with good heatsinking) at around 400mah, they are regarded as the best Red Diodes, so why mess with anything else?

There will normaly be 2 diodes in a drive like that a Red & Infra Red.

Stay away from Ebay you will get ripped off, have a look in the buy sell & trade section on the forum and company section.

For LOC's this is one of the best at the moment http://shop.stonetek.org/
