hi, im new to the forum and i was hoping i can get some info...
i just bought a laser pointer pen from radio shack for 20.00
its 650nm 5mW.
is there a way to mod this laser to make it burn?

I modded a 5mw green laser "CORE" and with a lens it burns, But when I tried to mod a RatShack red it burned out the LD.

Pot modding will probably leave your with a burned out LD.
 
cool cool , well i ordered a 5mw green laser from wicked laser. can you help me mod it so it can burn....

if you do mod a green laser to make it burn better, even if you don't immediately kill it it'll probably die fairly quickly (maybe a day, a week, a month...), and i've heard the wicked lasers core isn't much good for pot modding (wicked lasers isn't really much good for anything!). if you're looking for something really cheap that can burn, you may want to look at the dealextreme lasers, but these are cheaply made and on outputs higher than 50mW emit some IR. if you can spare the money, get an X-65/85/105 from novalasers - they are some of the cheapest *good quality* high power lasers you can find :) and welcome to LPF, hope you have fun!
 
I'll second Nova Lasers they have some great prices and typically you will get a laser of a higher output than its rating, like a X-85 will probably be putting out around 95-100 mw.

Another option since your already talking about modding is to buy a diode and build your own laser. theres been some really good deals on the forum lately.

well, my X85 is 90mW, so it is all a bit random. hell, there must actually be someone with an 85mW X85 somewhere! hehe

Yea but they are hiding, lol. mW envy at its worst :-[ ;D
 
Yeah I would steer clear of RatShack laser pens. If you want just a 5 mW to toy with then goto Wal-Mart and they have them for like $3.99. Hope I helped. ;)
 
atlasnova do cheap, seemingly reliable <5mW reds, $13 for 650nm or $24 for 635nm
