RECI Laser tube problem

I have a problem with a Reci S6 CO2 tube. The old power supply died so I've got a new one with a mA readout. The tube is lasing but the beam at the anode seems to start at the end of the coil (ie off to one side). The plasma gets straightened out by the tube but it seems to hit the guide tube at the cathode end as well unless I crank up the current.

Any suggestions about how I've badly wired it all back up gratefully received.

Thanks, I'll try to take some pictures.

It can't be normal because, sadly, there's virtually no laser power any more.

You're leaving out a lot of information here. Like, all of it. What power supply? How did you wire it up? What current are you reading? How are you adjusting the current? What voltage input? What are you basing power measurement on? The old power supply died how? How did you determine the tube was good? How did you determine the old power supply was bad? How did you have the old power supply wired up? We can't help you unless you tell us the whole story.
