really cheap glasses for bluray

My professor picked up a pair of these glasses over the weekend. They seem to block almost all of the light coming off the diode. I'm sure they arent rated for high powered lasers, but for less than 100mW they are real good for the price. I was able to see the light from white paper, but almost all of the light reflecting off the photodiode in our test was gone.

Hmmm...

I never really thought about it before, but for near-UV lasers would you need to get glasses that protect against a variety of wavelengths?
You said you couldn't see the 405nm, but you could see the fluorescence off the paper? I wonder if the florescence would be dangerous at higher wattages...

Just as a wild hair guess I'd say somewhere between OD 1-2. I was able to see the fourescence just fine, although it was yellow through the lenses, not blue since they are tinted and I could barely make out the 405 light from the diode itself.

Since 405nm is near UV, you can get away with using regular UVA/UVB sunglasses - yes, I said sunglasses - just like those blu-blockers This is the ONLY laser wavelength I would recommend using regular sunglasses for - and they would only be okay for indirect exposure - a direct hit could still burn through I would think, because of the minor wavelength differences, and because of the dilation of your pupils. Best practice - BE CAREFUL !

I just found out you can get these from walgreens as well. They are 2 for $15 here.
