Hi,laser funs ;D
i have an old sony dvd rom and i wonder how many mw is the laser. To check the wavelength i open it and supply it.I see a red beam so i thing that is 632nm red laser.
Anyone know the power of the diode? Is it worth to take it apart and make it a laser pointer?
Thanks.

It's definetly not 632nm.A diode laser would be more like 650nm.HeNe's are 632nm.
It's a 16X DVD Writer. The diode could probably reach 150mW safely(and have a relatively long lifetime) if powered properly.

Oooooh...I see...it's actually a 16x reader.Well thats not going to be of much use.It's probably around 1mW

I don't think you're gonna be able to get that much.Reader diodes are pretty weak.

If it says class 1 then probably 1mw.  We are using class 3b lasers 5-500mw class 4 is 500+mw
You are right but the class 1 is the power hit the dvd disc not the diode as i read from a net.the diode mabe is much more :-?

If it is ONLY a reader then you might get much more, like 5mw.

Class 1 refers to the drive itself.Even though it's a laser product, no radiation is actually emited from it, so it's class 1.The diode itself is class 3b, maybe reader diodes are only class 3a :p
