Pros and Cons of different Diodes?

Hey there,

I've been scooping around a bit and realized there are a full lexicon of different modules size for various diodes.
5.6mm, 3.8mm, 9mm ,12mm and more.

That raises a question.
Why do we have modules of so many different sizes?
What are their advantages and disadvantages?

I would much appreciate it for some insight into this :thanks:

Diodes cone in different packages. Usually its application dependant on why they are packaged as such. For small tight spaces like in a cd drive may only have room for a 3.8 or 5.6. Where as a projector has the ability to house a larger diode. I would assume a larger die would enclosed in some of th larger packages but I could be wrong. Check out thorlabs website and look at diodes. There are a lot of packages we dont normaly deal with that are out there. Like the c-mount. There are a few builds with those and that new 5W red is a c-mount but its not standard for us.

For the same reason transistors come in different packages. Bigger packages can dissipate more heat, but sometimes the buyer wants something smaller.

so basically bigger is always better when size isn't important?

Yes, but also like transistors, the lower power ones will not be available in larger packages.
