Hello,

I am in the market for a portable laser. I would like it to be powerful - 10 watts or more.

Was wondering if anyone knows if the technology has reached a level where we can build/buy portable CO2 lasers?

If there is a good dealer that sells lasers that are 10 W or greater, please let me know.

Thanks!

Goggle it.

10Wor more hand held laser exists only in your imagination/daydream world.

Portable CO2 laser --get real-that's a bad joke question--right?

Smells like an under a bridge type T post to me

Why would you even want such a powerful invisible laser with as little as you know about lasers. You are an accident looking for a place to happen.

Thanks for the replies. Was not joking.

Also, glad you are enjoying yourselves. Didn't expect keyboard warriors on this forum. Oh well. Please don't assume anything about me. People that assume things make themselves look like idiots.

If there is a 7 watt laser, there should be a 10 watt laser soon with the pace of technology advancement.

I know a bit about lasers, and I've seen 40 watt CO2 laser tube builds on youtube which might be real. Not sure.

=D

I'm so relieved to know you've seen YouTube videos of CO2 lasers. That certainly puts my mind at ease. I am gong by your introduction thread and the questions you ask to assess your current knowledge about lasers. Trying to get "the most powerful laser" that is available is a kid's daydream. Lasers are used to so many things, burning among the least of these.

Try to understand that we all feel a duty to the hobby and that is anchored in laser safety.

Let me ask you, what kind of protective eye wear do you own right now ?

How many fire extinguishers are in your line of sight, in the room you are sitting in right now, how many in your home or workshop?

I have several pairs of laser attenuation glasses, 3 pairs are within my reach and I have 4 fire extinguishers in just this room.

I use the glasses regularly, the fire extinguishers never, but it's good that I have them just in case.

I also have a working understanding of the electro magnetic spectrum and how it effects us, and I understand that a mistake taking only a single moments can cost a lifetime of agony, that's why myself and others think of laser safety first.

So don't feel like you're under attack, there are good people here who like to share information, but most of all we don't want anyone to get seriously physically hurt or worse yet hurt someone else, so if defending safety means hurting your feelings then so be it, because emotionally you will heal, but a ruined eyeball won't.

Besides the physical size of C02 tubes there is also a high voltage hazard, so it's unlikely that anyone would build one for you, besides building it yourself gives you an invested interest in understanding how it works and what the hazards are :)

p.s. What lasers do you own right now ? Typically people start with something in the visible range and of the " pointer " variety.

I dont have glasses right now, but will get them when I get my first laser. I have laser sights for my fire arms and low power laser points to play with my cats.

I do understand everything about safety when it comes to lasers. I made sure to research extensively for the last 2 weeks.

Was expecting constructive responses. The replies above are aimed at cutting me down, and to me that is nothing useful other than giving a good raise to their self esteem. Pathetic.

If there was such a concern for safety, why not just ask what my understanding is on that topic in the first place?

Don't judge me based on my needs being different than yours. Nothing is more entertaining that destroying stuff in my opinion. It doesn't make me childish to want a kick ass powerful laser to destroy stuff. It makes you childish to label me without knowing anything about me.

You seem to be nothing more than a troll, and I will stop feeding you now. LOL!

The straight answer is we have some trolls who like to play games, and someone new looking for the most powerful turn key laser they can get raises the red flag.

Your last statement : " Nothing is more entertaining that destroying stuff in my opinion. " again raises the red flags.

Yes burning and cutting, doing work with direct energy is enjoyable when done safely, but observing a beautiful beam safety terminated and sparkling in the moist night air is also very enjoyable.

You seem to have only one goal in mind and it causes some concern.

Thanks Redcowboy,

Yes I know in this new safe space world, everything has to be bubble wrapped. I’m sure as long as I take all the safety precautions, there will be no issues. Yes, looking at a laser for a bit would be nice, but with the safety glasses, doesn’t it restrict what you can see? I guess you could record it with a camera and view later. I would rather burn holes in things and test to see what a high powered laser can do in terms of destruction in a safe manner of course lol

Pretty much says it all.

PS You can "destroy" much more stuff with a box of kitchen matches than you are ever going to be able to do with anything laser you have asked about.

Is very obvious you have no idea of what you are talking about and it is all based on imaginings and daydreams of power to destroy.

If you have all the answers, just go do whatever your "needs"/issues drive you to do.
Why post anything here and take issue with any attempt to help or inform you.

Have to say it all sounds like a child w. issues world pant load as Paul has said "Trying to get "the most powerful laser" that is available is a kid's daydream."

Aww gee, thanks peeps.

Pretty sure there was nothing said to me that was constructive other than what cowboy posted.

How do I not know what I am talking about? There are tons of videos showing the power of some lasers. Can these videos not be used for reference? Did I say anything about building a laser? The only really important thing is safety, and I know safety so your comment is irrelevant.

Wanting to destroy things is a human characteristic. Denying that makes you look like a fool. Look at the state of the world right now. Won’t be long before you keyboard warriors are thrown out of your parents basements into the real world. What a shock that will be. Will bring my popcorn and a lawn chair to watch the tears. Hahahahaha.

Did you see the 40w C02 laser destroy the wood ?

No, that's because a layer of charcoal will build up insulating the virgin wood behind it.

Focused needle thin it will cut in a controlled manner, but not " destroy " with a short blast.

In industry jets of inert gas clear away ash/char, molten metal is blown out of the cut by a jet of inert gas otherwise it wouldn't cut like that.

A true DEW that can " destroy " an enemy at tactical distance, that's before they fire a hypersonic missile at your ship, will need to be extremely powerful, possibly in the millions of watts.
