The case of the Pointer and Laser Module is used as the return
path of the current like 99% of Laser pointers..

Current flows through the case of the laser diode and through the die. No wire required.

Or put another way.. The case of the laser IS the other wire.

There are 3 pins on most diodes. Pos, neg, case. They just ground the pos pin of the diode on the case, the case is pressed into a heat sink, which is pressed into the host, which the pos spring connected. Its a complete circuit. If you wanted to use just the module you'd need to hook the pos to the heat sink on the module.
