Hello,
I am currently working on my PHD in Physics using pickup heads and I came across a PHR-803T HD-DVD. I know how to turn the laser on, use it and everything. The problem is that I want to use the photodiode detector that comes in the pickup and I have no idea of the pinout (it has 20 pins!).

The PHR-803T comes in the Toshiba SD-S802A HD-DVD reader, but I have already called them for a Service Manual and had no luck!

Does anybody have any datasheet regarding the whole HD-DVD PHR-803T pickup? Or a service manual for the Toshiba SD-S802A HD-DVD reader?

Or has anyone gone to all the trouble of probing pin by pin to see which are diodes?

I know it should have a 4 quadrant detector + tracking detectors (these could be 4 + 4 or 2 +2).

Any help would be deeply appreciated. And I hope to be able to make some contributions with the info I have been rounding up by using bothe dvd and hd-dvd drives.

Morning,

I am also highly interested in some information about the photodiodes in the phr-803T.

here is what I found out so far:

In most diode-arrays for optical drives the diodes are not connected to the pins of the chip. For every photodiode there is an integrated operational amlifier used for current-to-voltage conversion. It is also possible that the calculation for the focus offset is done in analog hardware on the chip.

The chip needs at least 2 voltages: power supply and refence voltage.

The sledge is part of the TOSHIBA SD-5802A HD-DVD Drive.
It´s the drive you can find in the external HD-DVD drive for xbox 360.

All pins of the sledge seem to connect to the ribbon-cable thats connects the sledge and the drive-pcb.

I found a picture of the pcb and on the chip that seem to drive the chip of interest you can read:
Japan
87517
60
0628
E1 K1

I´m trying to build a very accurate Laser-Plotter.
Hope my info still reach you and is useful.
Please contact me if you have some more info about the photodiodes.

Have fun, malboro
