Yes, always put the power switch between the battery and driver, never between the driver and diode. Always check for and discharge any output capacitor on your driver prior to connecting a laser diode. A charge in this cap can kill your diode.

^What he said . Discharging a capacitor is done by connecting both it's pins together, effectivly shorting them out. That way a capacitor will discharge itself. ONLY THEN you solder on your laser diode.
