I got a great idea. Wouldn't be awesome to not deal with aluminum heatsinks and have true compact cooling. the military is working on using phase change materials to soak up heat from diode arrays. the largest obstacle to miniature lasers that can cut a man in half is the cooling equipment. There is a company called microtec that sells micro encapsulated phase change material.

I'd tend to think blocks of aluminum will suit hobbyists just fine for the time being.. Those who need further cooling can turn to TEC's (peltiers).
Even with a really cheap and lousy TEC you can still end up cooling your diode to the point where water condensation becomes a huge problem... I can't see using phase change cooling for something that's outputting a fraction of a watt of heat.
