Open Can IR Diode

Anyone try using the Open Can IR Diode? ::) each DVD drive that using Open Can Red also comes with Open Can IR.
How powerful is it? can it be used for burning like the 808nM IR Diode?
 





I saved the IR diodes from my Pioneer 112D DVDs. I figured that they might come in handy for testing drivers or something. But I tried 2 of them to test a driver and both were dead. Now, I know nothing about the IR diodes. I connected them the same way I have connected the Senkat and the open can diodes. Or, maybe they couldn't handle the 350mA that I was testing them with?? But, I didn't even see a 'flicker'. Maybe they connect differently?

You are correct. Looking through the magnifying lens mounted on the heat sink make it looks like open can.

I mounted an IR diode taking from a LG 18x /52x drive, this one is a windows less can. I ran the diode at 210mA it can burn through CD case in 10 seconds; :oits burning power is equivalent to an open can running at 340mA. According to the Sony LD datasheet the 52x CD/R diode is around 240mW.

I extracted two IR windowless LDs from LG 20x. They are not quite open-cans as the can is there. The window is missing. You ran it at 210mA :o ! That's surprising, because one of them barely lasted 5 minutes at 150mA when it died. Im running the second one at 120mA, but im planning on pushing it a bit higher. I stripped down the first one and made a photo under a microscope. The upper bar is slanted. I wonder if this is normal and how it affects the direction of the beam with respect to the pedestal.

I noticed some 48x-52x CDR LDs are brighter than others, this one can smoke electrical tape up close before installed in the collimation housing. I have more than 5 minutes run time so far, the current was up to 260mA for a short time, the housing felt only a little warm after running for a few minutes. The burning power is awesome, may be it is because very little light (power) was reflected off unlike the DVD LDs.
 
It is surprising how reflectivity of some colors changes from red to near IR. For instance, I can burn thru green leafs with a red LD with ease, whereas most of them seem to reflect a big enough portion of the 780nm spectrum to not allow any visible marks from a 100mW-ish source. Also, the IR dot looks quite bright when projected over a spot from a black marker pen.
Have you measured the drop across the LD at that current?

The drop is 2.25v running at around 220mA, the same current running on Red LD is 2.45v.
 
hey themonk is your LD you are using is from CD reader or recorder at 48x and 52x?do you have picture how it burn things? thanks.

It is from combo 18x DVD Burner 48x / 52X CD Burner, the LD is used to burn CD. It burns through CD case in 10 seconds.
 
thanks for the info, any way what LD driver did you use ther to drive that? and what battery voltage need to drive that? whats your adjustment (ma) for that LD from CD burner? I apologised for such many questions :) thanks...
