NUBM44 laser suddenly stopped working – driver or diode failure?

Hello everyone,

Some time ago I built a laser with the following setup:
  • Diode: NUBM44 (7W)
  • Driver: SXD 4.5A
  • Host: Survival Laser
  • Power: 2× 18650 Li-ion batteries

The laser worked fine for a while, but recently it suddenly stopped working. A friend helped me with the build and did all the soldering, since I don’t have much experience with electronics myself.

Is it possible that either the driver or the diode has failed?
Is there any safe way to test the diode directly with the batteries, or would that most likely damage it?

I’d like to determine which component is faulty so I can replace only what’s necessary.

Any advice or troubleshooting tips from more experienced members would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

The problem could be many things: diode, driver, wiring, switch and/or batteries. You'll need a multi-meter to start ruling things out. I offer repair services if you need help figuring it out.

Is the switch on end of the host?
Rule out the switch if it is. Unscrew the switch and take it off and role up a small piece of aluiminum foil and with the batterys still in. then touch the back of the battery and the inner side of the host with the foil at the threads that are bare from anodizing.
If the laser works then its the switch.
If you put the batteyrs in backwords you shorted out the driver.
Your sure the batterys are charged?
