Hey everyone!
I just joined this whole laser pointer scene and was interested in making a blue laser diode laser pointer! I've seen kipkay's videos and was probably going to follow them but I had one question about a DVD writer i already own. It's a SONY DRU-500AX Rewritable drive unit and I was just wondering how strong the laser is/how far would it go?

Hello and welcome to the forum!
First off, I would not recommend following kipkays tutorials. There is plenty of information on the forum about how to build your first laser. The DVD burner you mentioned is a 4x burner. I am not sure about how many milliwatts it would be, but I I had to guess, I would say 50mW.

That burner does not have a Blue 445nm Laser Diode in it...
It has a Blu-Ray (Violet) 405nm Laser Diode in it...

As was suggested.... forget anything KipKay says about Lasers...
KipKay has no clue about Laser Safety...

Read the Tutorials ans the FAQs and Stickies on the Forum
and you will build a Laser the correct way...

It depends on divergence, but I think it's safe to say it'll carry at LEAST a couple miles.

That all depend on how you build it and how you lens it and how
you drive it and by what means...
There are too many variables that we don't know yet about your
finished build...

what would you advise for the casing? I was going to put it in a mini-mag flashlight cuz of kipkay but you guys seem to know alot more than him. Can you provide a link to a walk through for making a laser with this diode that you would personally recommend? thanks so much guys

Click on either jayrobs tutorials or dtrs tutorials link in my sig. You will find tons of tutorials with lots of different options and pics. :beer:
